Picture It! Book Club

Picture It! Book Club In-Person

The Picture It book club is a book club for adults who love picture books!  Each month we look at picture books that explore a different topic. This month we will be celebrating libraries as part of National Library Card Sign-up month. Our book of focus, Planting Stories: the life of librarian and storyteller Pura Belpré, will also give us the opportunity to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage month.

Pura Belpré was the first Latina librarian to be hired by the New York Public Library.  Through her amazing storytelling and puppeteering, Pura Belpré enriched the lives of Puerto Rican children in the U.S.A by disseminating and preserving Puerto Rican folklore.  In 1996 the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) established an annual award, the Pura Belpré Award, to be awarded to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. Many books that have won this award will be available for perusing and checking out at the event.

We meet during the lunch hour, so feel free to bring along your lunch as you enjoy the books and camaraderie.  Registration is strongly encouraged.
