"Stoner" by John Williams
In this 20th century American classic, William Stoner is born at the end of the 19th century into a dirt-poor farming family. Sent to the university to study agronomy, he instead embraces English literature and becomes an academic. Stoner experiences many disappointments--estrangement from his family, a stalled career, a cold marriage. Even his daughter--the light of his life--turns from him as solitude becomes his refuge.
