Chester County's Most Notorious Criminals:

The Johnston Gang

We are pleased to have another engaging discussion with local author Bruce Mowday on October 8 at 1:00 PM.  Bruce will be talking about three of his true crime books, Stealing Wyeth, Jailing the Johnston Gang, and his recent book Small-Town Cops in the Crosshairs.    The following are brief descriptions about these books:

Stealing Wyeth: "Andrew Wyeth was one of the best known American artists in the world in the 20th century with his works, including the Helga series, being sought after by serious art collectors worldwide. His father, N. C., and son, Jamie, are integral parts of the best known American family of artists. A gang of thieves decided to steal an original Wyeth painting for their "retirement" and engaged a professional cat burglar (who was responsible for more than 1,500 crimes during his criminal career) to steal a Wyeth painting. The theft resulted in taking 15 paintings from the Wyeth estate in picturesque Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. The search for the paintings takes the investigators throughout the United States and involves dangerous thieves, gamblers, drug dealers and murderers. In the process of tracking down the thieves and the paintings, hundreds of other crimes were solved"-- Provided by publisher.

Jailing the Johnston Gang: Pennsylvania's Johnston Gang, led by Bruce Johnston Sr. and his brothers Norman and David, netted millions through a prolific burglary ring during the 1960s and '70s. But in 1978, fearing that younger members of the gang were going to rat them out to the authorities, the brothers killed four teenagers and nearly killed Bruce Sr.'s own son. This book draws on personal interviews with investigators, attorneys, and even former gang members to detail how the combined efforts of federal, state, county, and local law enforcement agencies brought the brothers to justice.

Small-Town Cops in the Crosshairs: The sniper killings of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, policemen William Davis and Richard Posey shocked the American public in November 1972 and garnered national coverage on the major news networks at the time. Fifty years later, this book, the first to cover the slayings, details the cold-blooded ambush of the two small-town law enforcement officers by a member of the murderous Johnston Gang.

It is always important to support our local authors and attending a live program with Bruce Mowday is truly a wonderful experience.  He is extremely knowledgeable about his topics and his presentations are both informational and engaging.
