One of America’s most well-loved songbirds, Purple Martins, are native songbirds in the swallow family and, east of the Rocky Mountains, nest almost exclusively in human supplied housing. They are dependent on humans for their survival!

Last month, we presented a program on the basics of becoming a Purple Martin landlord. Are you already a Purple Martin Landlord? Want to go beyond the basics? Need more detailed information and tips? Although the numbers of Purple Martins have decreased significantly in Pennsylvania, successful “landlords” are the key to restoring their population. Join members of the Purple Martin Conservation Association, Chester County Parks and Preservation, The Friends of Sprinton Manor Farm and the PA Game Commission along with the Chester County Library to learn how you can make a difference in the Purple Martin population here in Pennsylvania. Learn more about Purple Martin nesting habits; egg laying, nestlings and fledglings. Learn how to do nest checks and become versed in emergency feeding, and understand the responsibilities of controlling predators and competition from non-native species.

This program is part of the Longwood Gardens 8^th Annual Community Read Program designed to encourage reading and start a conversation. In 2021 discover how one finds a passion for nature and explore what can become of that spark. Participants will be eligible for a free drawing for a one-day family pass for 4 to Longwood Gardens.
