Getting the Last Word: Writing Your Own Obituary - Part 2 In-Person
Getting The Last Word: Writing Your Own Obituary
If you could write your own last words, what would they be? How would you sum up the lessons you've learned or the experiences you've had? What if you could offer final wishes and blessings to family and friends? To the world? An obituary, in the end, is a portrait. Who better to write the portrait of your life than you?
This is a two-part workshop in which participants will explore the possibilities, the benefits, and the practice of writing their own obituary.
Part 1: We will discuss "why" someone might want to do this and the multi-layered benefits of doing so. The heart of the session includes Carin Bonifacino of Grieco Funeral Home sharing and reading actual obituaries written by people themselves before their death, with group discussion. At the end, participants will be given time to start working on their own draft.
Part 2: After three weeks, the group meets again so participants can share what they've written with one another. (Obituaries are meant to be public, so there's no reason to be shy!)
This is a workshop for anyone interested in reflecting on their life and exploring the idea of writing their own obituary. One need not be a "writer" per se, as the focus is on the process and not the "quality" of the writing. This is about connecting with the aspects of your life that you deem important. It is not a literary critique!
