Ned Hector: Revolutionary War Hero

Ned Hector: Revolutionary War Hero In-Person

Edward "Ned" Hector was a courageous Revolutionary War hero, a free Black man, and a teamster. He is best known for his bravery during the retreat at the Battle of Brandywine, where he refused to surrender his horses, wagon, and artillery supplies, declaring, “The enemy will not have my team. I will save the horses or perish myself.”

As a teamster and artilleryman under Colonel Proctor, Ned fought in both the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown. He was one of the thousands of African American men who served on both sides of the Revolution.

Noah Lewis, an actor and historical reenactor, brings Ned Hector’s legacy to life. Wearing the uniform of the Third Pennsylvania Artillery Company, Lewis shares the often-overlooked contributions of African Americans in the fight for freedom during the American Revolution.
