This Beautiful Fantastic: our "Sow and Tell Week" movie night In-Person
Inspired by the Longwood Gardens Community Read of 2024 (The Last Garden in England and The Secret Garden) with its focus on gardens as a source of human healing, Henrietta Hankin Library is excited host a special movie night for "Sow and Tell Week" with The Beautiful Fantastic. This movie, available through our library's movie streaming platform Kanopy, presents the story of Bella Brown. A reclusive young woman, Bella is threatened with eviction unless she gives her garden a makeover, she sets to work watched by her scornful and curmudgeonly next-door neighbour, Alfie. Blogger Morgan Mussel reflects in his blog, The First Gates, "Like The Secret Garden, this movie uses work with the 'organized chaos' of a garden as a metaphor for delving into what’s true about one’s own nature." A great movie comparison to Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic The Secret Garden!
This movie is rated PG and has a running time of 1hr 32min. It came out in 2016 and stars Jessica Brown Findlay as Bella and Oscar-nominated actor Tom Wilkinson as Alfie. There will be light refreshments available at the event as well as some free seed take-aways. Plus, attendees will be entered into a raffle for free passes for up to four people to Longwood Gardens! Registration is required.
