Hybrid: Natives Nurture: Supporting Health, Wildlife, and Climate Change, one Garden at a time. In-Person / Online

Inspired by the Longwood Gardens Community Read of 2024 (The Last Garden in England and The Secret Garden) with its focus on gardens as a source of human healing, Henrietta Hankin Library is excited to kick-off presentations for our "Sow and Tell Week", with a presentation by Delaware Nature Society Naturalist, Kerry Wilson.  Native plants have been growing in popularity in recent years.  Learn about why there is a call to action to garden with native plants and how you can make a difference with your backyard habitat.  Hear about the function and application of native plants in our environment and in various scenarios from urban pollinator gardens to schoolyard habitats and the certified wildlife habitat program. Discuss possible next steps in growing the native plant movement and what that might look like.

Kerry has an extensive science background with a degree in environmental science and a master’s in marine biology.  Throughout her career Kerry has always worked in areas of conservation from studying sea turtles to land restoration.  Kerry has been teaching for 20 years in various applications.  She served as the Director of Outdoor Education at St. Anne’s Episcopal School, where she restored the campus with a 6-acre pollinator meadow, bird plot area, and native gardens surrounding the school.  Kerry has been working on expanding the urban pollinator corridor throughout Wilmington.  Delaware Nature Society is currently implementing the City of Wilmington Urban Pollinator Corridor and Food Resilience Project . She loves all things science, especially while engaged in nature.  Kerry is passionate about equitable access to nature, immersive educational experiences, and connecting native planting to the food network.  When not at work providing habitat outreach, Kerry can be found in her own native gardens at home in Wilmington.

You may join us at the library for this virtual presentation, or participate from home via Zoom.  Your choice!  There will be light refreshments available at the event as well as some free seed take-aways.  Plus, virtual and in-person participants will be entered into a raffle for free passes for up to four people to Longwood Gardens!  But you must register.  Henrietta Hankin Library supports PA Forward Civic and Social Literacy.
