Cycle of Memory, a screening and discussion with the filmmaker In-Person / Online
Join us for a special intergenerational screening of 'Cycle of Memory,' the new award-winning documentary about two siblings' bicycle adventure to find the memories their grandfather lost to Alzheimer's. Their grandfather, Mel Schwartz, escaped the Great Depression on a bicycle adventure he’d remember for the rest of his life. Guided by old photographs of the 1945 trip, his grandchildren search for places he had visited, now aged by time. But while searching for Grandpa Mel’s past, the two siblings are confronted with their own fraught history. If they’re going to complete the turbulent journey, they’ll have to face their own emotional potholes and tumultuous relationship. Cycle of Memory explores the importance of intergenerational connection, healing painful pasts, and leaving a meaningful time capsule for the future.
The film is 72 minutes long and will be followed by a virtual Q+A with the filmmaker. Join us for this important discussion of questions that the film gives rise to, such as: What are the important conversations we have with our parents and grandparents while they still remember? How do we hold onto connection with our loved ones as they lose their memory? What do we want to make sure is passed down and saved before it’s too late?
This intergenerational perspective on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia has been resonating with diverse audiences, from Millennial caregivers to Senior Centers and Councils on Aging. Specifically, family members who have lost a parent to Alzheimer’s and have children of their own are finding that the film’s uplifting message, emphasizing what can’t be forgotten, provides a blueprint for families to hold on to their connection despite aging and memory loss.
Participants are welcome to join us virtually or in-person. Light refreshments will be provided to our in-person guests. Henrietta Hankin Library is co-sponsoring this event together with Merrill Gardens at Eagleview Landing, senior living and memory care center.
