ESL Class In-Person

Want to learn to understand and speak English?

¿Quiere aprender a entender y hablar inglés?

Speaking English pays BIG benefits! At work, and around town! We are all social creatures, and we solve problems through other people. The larger our circle of friends and acquaintances are, the more likely we will have someone who can help us resolve whatever challenge occurs in our lives.

¡Hablar inglés ofrece GRANDES beneficios! ¡En el trabajo y en el pueblo! Todos somos criaturas sociales y resolvemos problemas a través de otras personas. Cuanto más grande sea nuestro círculo de amigos y conocidos, es más probable que tengamos a alguien que pueda ayudarnos a resolver cualquier desafío que se presente en nuestras vidas.

MY APPROACH TO LEARNING ENGLISH MI ENFOQUE PARA APRENDER INGLÉS

Rather than focus on grammar (which is just something else to remember, in addition to all those new vocabulary words) I translate articles that are of interest to me, and I hope of interest to the students, so the student can see them in English and Spanish (As I have done with this note).

En lugar de centrarme en la gramática (que es algo más para recordar, además de todas esas nuevas palabras de vocabulario) traduzco artículos que me interesan, y espero interesar a los alumnos, para que el alumno pueda verlos en inglés y español (como he hecho con este Nota).

Reading Topics: The short articles we read include topics of American History, (which is part of the US Citizenship test), Latin American History and historical figures, Child Development (always of interest for young parents) and the challenges that we confront every day as adults.  My intent in this approach is to achieve “Two for One”: First is that we will improve your English language ability, and Secondly at the same time we will provide some “grown-up” information that will be useful in your daily lives.

The instructor and the students read the articles together, at least three times:

  1. First: the instructor reads the articles, one paragraph at a time to the students so they can HEAR the correct English pronunciation,
  2. Second: Then the students read that paragraph of the article out loud in Spanish, to make sure they understand the ideas in those paragraphs, and also to help me maintain my Spanish Language ability.
  3. And then we read that paragraph again in English, but phrase by phrase. The instructor reads a few words of the article in English, and then the students repeat the phrase that the instructor can focus on the correct pronunciation of the English words.
  4. Hearing, Seeing, and Speaking engages three separate functions in our mind, and helps students in learning and remembering new vocabulary.

Often there are comments and discussion by the students on the articles, which is a very positive development. Those comment and discussions indicate that the individual students are digesting the information and finding applications in their own lives.

A menudo hay comentarios y discusiones por parte de los estudiantes sobre los artículos, lo cual es un avance muy positivo. Esos comentarios y discusiones indican que los estudiantes individuales están asimilando la información y encontrando aplicaciones en sus propias vidas.

This sort of training will improve the students the ability to understand spoken and written English (and understanding is always the FIRST step in learning a language) and provide them with the foundation of spoken English necessary to learn English grammar if they are interested.

Este tipo de capacitación mejorará la capacidad de los estudiantes para comprender el inglés hablado y escrito (y la comprensión es siempre el PRIMER paso para aprender un idioma) y les proporcionará la base del inglés hablado necesario para aprender la gramática del inglés si están interesados.

Class meetings are on Monday and Wednesday Afternoon (12:00 to 2:00) in Oxford Library. I think this approach will work best with students who have “some” English. But new Students will also be welcome.

Las reuniones de clase son los lunes y miércoles por la tarde (1:00 a 3:00) en la Biblioteca de Oxford. Creo que este enfoque funcionará mejor con estudiantes que tienen "algo" de inglés. Pero los nuevos Estudiantes también serán bienvenidos. Llámame si estás interesado.
