Become a Citizen Scientist! Kick-off Citizen Science Month with SciStarters at Your Library In-Person

Citizen Science is a global movement that involves people from all walks of life in real science that matters to them. Each April, scientists, facilitators, citizen science project leaders and many others host events and programs to invite more people to discover all the ways they can participate in research that needs their help.

Citizen Science Month offers thousands of opportunities for you to turn your curiosity into impact. There’s something for everyone, everywhere! Join others in learning about and participating in real (and fun) ways to help scientists answer questions they cannot answer without you.

Today’s opportunities to participate in citizen science are boundless. Odds are there is a citizen science project that coincides with any hobby, interest or curiosity that you may have. Participating is easy! Often, you can use your mobile phone or the internet to collect and submit observations and to see results. These emergent, accessible platforms make it possible to help the USGS measure and record earthquake tremors; join NASA's effort in ground-truthing cloud photos, and even help monitor noise and light pollution in our communities. Platforms like iNaturalist provide free mobile apps for participants to share photos and observations of wildlife and nature in their backyards, cities and towns. For some projects, like Stall Catchers and Instant Wild you don't even have to leave the comfort of home to participate.

Join us and discover Citizen Science, the SciStarters program and events the Chester County Library has planned to help you start on your Citizen Science journey.

The Chester County Library offers “Citizen Science Kits” on several topics that are available to check out using your library card. Using the tools and instructions in the kit, collect and submit your collected data. Then return the kit to the library. Come and see what kits are new for 2023!
