Remembering, Honoring, Preserving the Legacy of Thaddeus Stevens: Film Screening & Discussion In-Person
At the beginning of April, an impressive statue honoring Pennsylvania statesman Thaddeus Stevens was installed and dedicated in front of the Adams County Courthouse in Gettysburg. It joins the statue of Thaddeus Stevens on the campus of the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in depicting the spirit and contributions of this passionate and successful leader. In conjunction with the dedication and the earlier celebration of Stevens’ 230th birthday, the Thaddeus Stevens Society commissioned a new hour-long documentary detailing Stevens’ pivotal role in the progress of our commonwealth and our nation. A dozen historians were interviewed in compiling this documentary, providing keen insights based on decades of research. This program seeks to relate history as it happened, and to counter mythology that has developed over the decades since Stevens’ passing. No political or philosophical agenda is being pushed.
Join us for a screening of the film, followed by a discussion led by the film's producer, David Atkinson. David spent 35 years working in the state Senate, most of that time for Senator Robert C. Jubelirer. He has a B.A. and M.S. from Shippensburg University. Always a history nerd/buff, doing documentaries is something he discovered to entertain himself in semi-retirement. He is a member of various museums and spends time each year touring battlefields and historical sites.
This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
