Community Gardening around the Village: Native Plants in the Landscape In-Person / Online
Learn about the importance of and ways to reduce turfgrass lawns and plant native plants to increase ecosystem function for all flora and fauna, including pollinators. Hear about the actionable steps you can take to increase biodiversity, beautify your property, improve forage and bring life to your yard.
About 6 years ago, as a Girl Scout leader, Jessie Shiffler led a program teaching teen-aged girls about the carbon impacts of growing food. In the process, she was inspired to start a small vegetable garden and realized the joy of growing plants. While at a beekeeping meeting about a year later, she noticed an amazing amount of insect activity on a particular plant, and after some research, learned that it was Mountain Mint - a native. That one plant started a life-changing journey of learning about all the wonderful benefits of natives! In January 2021, Jessie started a local chapter of the national non-profit group, Wild Ones, to help spread this message and to get native plants out in everyone's landscapes. Help her heal the Earth, one yard at a time!
This event is free and open to the public. The program will also be livestreamed on Zoom for those unable to attend in person. Registration is required.
